Meet Star!
Star, our Buff Orpington, does indeed steal the show! Very friendly and gentle, Star enjoys being held, getting bathed, and eating, but number one is eating! She definitely has a mother instinct to make sure she herself is well-cared for, so that she can be a good mom for baby chicks. Orpingtons are known to go broody and their body type and behavior well-supports this.
Star makes us laugh every time at her incredible speed to find the next delicious morsel. If the chickens even hear our sliding door open, they come running all hooting and peeping. Our Star of course joins in, running and flapping her wings as she sinks her head and body into a torpedo shape to help her get places quicker. Even so, she is still the slowest long distance runner of all our chickens, but slow and steady wins the race!
More like all torpedo up front with two powerful jet-engine thighs propelling her from behind—she is quite a wobbly sight to see, but it gets the job done! Her true speed is more food-related.
She is so fast at treat times that somehow she manages to get nearly a 3:1 ratio of any food or treats given—she is incredibly quick on the draw and the rebound—we are always amazed. If any of our other chickens even hesitate for a second at the treat they are being offered, its already gone! Star swallowed it and is already swiping her next bite.
Despite Star’s competitive food hounding, she is incredibly sweet and loves to be pet. She’ll happily walk up to us and have a chat as well. Her chicken voice is quite a bit deeper and scratchy than one would expect to go along with her gorgeous gold feather exterior and her egg song is quite loud but happy! Star has so far been a consistent egg layer and only recently might be toying with going broody, or maybe she just needs some “alone time.”
We were pleasantly surprised by Star’s pretty pink eggs that are pink when she first lays them, and then change to more of a light brownish pink color after they sit in the refrigerator and cool. She’s an amazing, entertaining girl and we enjoy her very much!
