Week by Week Photos
See photos of our Welsummer chicken, Sweetie, as a two week-old baby chick and week by week through her growth and development!
Meet Sweetie!
Sweetie is our Welsummer chicken from Baxter Barn in Fall City. She was between 1-2 weeks old when we got her from Baxter Barn as she was significantly bigger than all the day-old chicks but slightly smaller than Queue, our Black Cuckoo Marans, who was two weeks old (and they weren’t selling any day-old Welsummers that day).
Her personality matches her name—yep! she earned it! From the beginning, Sweetie has been, of course, sweet, very sweet, and slightly shy and maybe even a tiny bit skittish, but always sweet. She is friendly and docile.
But now, Ninja Chicken she is. (A little Yoda in there for you). As she matured towards about 16 weeks, she began speaking up more and more and when Sweetie speaks up, she sounds like a ninja about to lay into you with some serious ninja moves. Watch out for Sweetie! Not really, but her new sound is a little bit, shall we say, loud and a little bit demanding.
We continue to talk to her sweetly and cheerfully in hopes that she might calm down with her more aggressive sounding nature. She really is very sweet, she sounds intimidating, but is really not, she’s just having a conversation and is very talkative—especially if you talk back! She’s also started this woodwind-type instrumental sound that she repeats in triplicate. It’s much more beautiful and fitting for who she is than her alter ego—Ninja Chicken!
Ninja Chicken
As Sweetie has matured, she has continued her Ninja Chicken sounds when she wants your attention about something, but usually uses her more lilting, woodwind sound to communicate and we communicate the same way right back to her! She also does these sweet little chirps in conversation when we pick her up and hold her—which she loves! She will literally walk over to us and squat down, wanting to be picked up and held. Very endearing!
